Given the contemporary significance of the Knowledge Economy, Intellectual Capital (IC) is considered as an essential element leading to and enhancing value creation in and by companies. On the other hand, the survival and expansion of companies, industrial sectors and entire economies depends on their constant capacity to innovate. In this sense, intellectual capital is increasingly viewed as a top priority for management and organization practice, and a reliable source of sustainable competitive strength: the result of innovation. This module focuses on the process of creating and enhancing intellectual capital that may benefit the firm’s innovation capacity and its future competitive advantage. In broader terms, IC management issues in the dynamic evolution of a business enterprise will be reviewed and analyzed.
This course will challenge the company managers to identify where IC including legally protected Intellectual Property can be managed to create new value streams for the organization. It will outline the importance of Intellectual Property in the firm by giving both a background to its legal protection and the management of IPR in order to derive future economic value for the firm. Furthermore, it raises awareness of the unknown or untapped applications for IC. Given the fast pace of innovation, the application of IC related value drivers becomes a sine qua non for sustained business growth. Historically, one of the critical challenges to IC creation and Innovation in businesses has been its limited scope for commercialization. Consequently, this module will help the students understand how value can successfully be extracted from IC creation and management in practical business circumstances. Specifically, the students will be motivated to identify and asses value enhancement opportunities existing in individual IC asset classes as well as synergies achievable through innovative combinations.
